the gift of the “impossible”

“It may be that we have lost our ability to hold a blazing coal, to move unfettered through time, to walk on water, because we have been taught that such things have to be earned; we should deserve them; we must be qualified. We are suspicious of grace. We are afraid of the lavishness of the gift.
But a child rejoices in presents!”

(page 77)

“Am I suggesting that we really ought to be able to walk upon water? That there are (and not just in fantasies) easier and faster ways to travel than by jet or car? Yes, I am. There are too many stories of mystics being able to move hundreds of miles through the power of contemplation for us to be able to toss them aside. Over and over again throughout the centuries we have made choices which were meant to free us, but which ultimately have limited and restricted us. But the artist has retained some of the freedom we have lost in the industrial dailiness of our living.”

Walking on Water: Reflections of Faith and Art

by Madeleine L’ Engle

God has VIEW.

Merrily reading “Walking on Water: Reflections of Faith and Art” by Madeleine L’ Engle today, drinking up creative writing juices as I continue to work on writing my book, I drifted upon this brilliant sentence:

“I have a point of view.

You have a point of view.

But God has view.”

My soul like a sleeping swan

Today I was asking God what I should do to move onward today: having finished ministry school Friday, gradually working on writing my book, eagerly waiting for job(s) to come together, feeling stir-crazy and frustrated. I felt that He said, “Read some poetry.” I thought it was a good idea, but less “practical” than my mind preferred. Nevertheless, I got out a book of poetry. This particular book is Shelley’s Poems and is over one hundred years old. I flipped open to a couple sections and read. In my reading, I floated across this:

“Asia Answers” from Shelley’s “Hymn to Asia”

My soul is an enchanted boat,

Which, like a sleeping swan, doth float

Upon the silver waves of thy sweet singing;

And thine doth like an angel sit

Beside a helm conducting it,

Whilst all the winds with melody are ringing.

It seems to float ever, forever,

Upon that many-winding river,

Between mountains, woods, abysses,

A paradise of wildernesses!

Till, like one in slumber bound,

Borne to the ocean, I float down, around,

Into a sea profound, of ever-spreading sound.

And so, in my restlessness, I find the mental image of a sleeping swan: the promise of rest for those who dare to believe it is possible to rest while travelling down the river into the great ocean of destiny.  God has lived in Rest since creation, and through Jesus we are invited into it – not merely one day a week, but ongoing rest – the peace that passes understanding sort of rest. Ahhhhh… time to curl up our swan necks and tuck our heads into soft feathers, to travel while at rest. Sweet Jesus, making all things possible as usual.

“Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it . . .

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrew 4:1 & 4:16)

things in the sky

“I really like things in the sky.”

– me, in response to a compliment about my earrings with hot air balloons on them

“Hahahaha. You sound like such a mystic.”

– Nick Moon, in response to the blank looks of the people I’d just spoken to

“Come up here.”

– Jesus (Revelation 4:1), in response to John as he gazes at an OPEN door in heaven

to love without judgment

A French priest, conducting a retreat, said,

To love anyone is to hope in him always.

From the moment at which we begin to judge anyone,

to limit our confidence in him,

from the moment at which we identify (pigeonhole) him,

and so reduce him to that,

we cease to love him, and he ceases to be able to become better.

We must dare to love in a world that does not know how to love.

❤ Baghdad ❤

15 years ago a dream seed was planted in the soil of my heart. Long before that Abraham looked up  into a night sky and dared to believe a distant promise. (Genesis 15) Later, 10-20 years later, he had his Isaac. This year I get to have my Baghdad. I get to go somewhere my heart has dreamed of for quite some time.

God’s word to Abraham rings, like a loud top spinning into silence on a hardwood floor. Its frenzy and its stillness enthrall one’s ears and one’s being. All my cells love his voice. They hush to listen. They lean against my skin as a child to a door, and they intently listen. What they hear electrifies them into ecstasy. He has a way with words.

“Do not be afraid, Abram.

I am your shield,

your very great reward.”

(Genesis 15:1)

That’s it. Those are His words.

I love God. He is not only our protection, he is our promise. His Presence is both shield and reward.

In honor of my Father, the Creator, and the one who LOVES cities: here are some illustrations of sweet, beautiful Baghdad, Iraq – by a man who was born there in 1964. Nuzzle your heart’s ears against the door, listen for heaven’s words, heaven’s secrets, heaven’s dreams for this priceless city and its people. Shhhh…. listen. Papa God is speaking. . .

He has dreams for Baghdad and He wants to let His sons and daughters in on them.

“It is the glory of God to conceal a matter;
to search out a matter is the glory of kings.”

(Proverbs 25:2)

* impossABILITY *

“In order to attain the impossible, one must attempt the absurd.”

– Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (Spanish writer, author of the masterwork ‘El quijote’, 1547-1616)

“Love feels no burden,

thinks nothing of trouble,

attempts what is above its strength,

pleads no excuse of impossibility;

for it thinks all things lawful for itself,

and all things possible.”

– Thomas Kempis

My friend and Central Asia travel partner, Laura, assembled a DREAM BOOK consisting of the dreams of students at Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry, where I am currently finishing my second year. I suggest browsing our dreams here:

Be inspired. Write out your own dreams. Smash boxes. Dream the “impossible” dream. : )

Let the earth intrigue you with wonder

“After the one extravagant gesture of creation in the first place,

the universe has continued to deal exclusively in extravagances,

flinging intricacies and colossi down aeons of emptiness,

heaping profusions on profligacies with ever-fresh vigor.

The whole show has been on fire from the word go.

I come down to the water to cool my eyes.

But everywhere I look I see fire;

that which isn’t flint is tinder,

and the whole world sparks and flames.”

— Annie Dillard, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek        (one of my all-time favorite authors)
